Now that we have some hardware in our hands and NVIDIA has formally launched the GeForce GTX 295, we are very interested in putting it to the test. NVIDIA's bid to reclaim the halo is quite an interesting one. If you'll remember from our earlier article on the hardware, the GTX 295 is a dual GPU card that features two chips that combine aspects of the GTX 280 and the GTX 260. The expectation should be that this card will fall between GTX 280 SLI and GTX 260 core 216 SLI.
As for the GTX 295, the GPUs have the TPCs (shader hardware) of the GTX 280 with the memory and pixel power of the GTX 260. This hybrid design gives it lots of shader horsepower with less RAM and raw pixel pushing capability than GTX 280 SLI. This baby should perform better than GTX 260 SLI and slower than GTX 280 SLI

We've also got another part coming down the pipe from NVIDIA. The GeForce GTX 285 is a 55nm part that amounts to an overclocked GTX 280. Although we don't have any in house yet, this new card was announced on the 8th and will be available for purchase on the 15th of January 2009.

ATI Radeon HD 4550, one of the junior solutions in the latest Radeon lineup, boasts pretty attractive features: it supports DirectX 10.1, advanced second generation Avivo HD video processor, hardware video streams acceleration, 7.1 sound over HDMI, and consumes very little power. But this is all the promises from the developers. In our turn, we are going to find out if Radeon HD 4550 is really as good for playing new gaming titles and functioning as part of HTPC system for playing back Blu-ray movies.

Intel Corp. is the world’s largest supplier of graphics adapters, despite of the fact that it has not introduced a single new discrete graphics chip in the last decade. The company still has hopes for the market of standalone graphics processors and plans to introduce its Larrabee product in 2009 – 2010 timeframe. Since the new player on the market of graphics cards poses a great interest, we decided to ask Intel a number of questions about the market of discrete graphics processors, the company’s vision of the GPU design as well as Larrabee project.

Until recently, there used to be a gap in the product line-up of ATI graphics accelerators. ATI Radeon HD 4830 should patch it up and strengthen the front line between ATI Radeon HD 4670 and ATI Radeon HD 4850.

We recently reviewed the ATI Radeon HD4550 and HD4350 chipsets. Our conclusion stated that these cards would be perfect additions for the HTPC user looking to upgrade to hardware accelerated BD playback and 8-channel LPCM audio output via HDMI. We just received our first retail HD4350 product from MSI. It is available now for $39.99 (a $10 rebate is also available this month).

We are still testing this card along with several other budget video cards and processors for our final IGP Chronicles article. However, we wanted to provide a quick update on the H.264 playback and power consumption results with a couple of popular processors from Intel and AMD, the dual-core E5200 and 4850e.

The MSI R4350-D512H is a half height card design that features a large heatsink for passive cooling duties. The card includes 512MB of GDDR2 memory with a core clock at 600MHz and memory clock at 500MHz. MSI includes a driver CD and instruction manual only. Unfortunately, an ATI DVI-HDMI adapter is not included in the kit. We feel this is a mistake on MSI's part, as the card should find its way into many HTPC solutions.

The adapter is available online for $10 (the price of that rebate from MSI) or a friend might already have one if they recently purchased a HD4670, HD4850, or HD4870 card as most manufacturers included them in their kits. The R4350 supports dual-link DVI so resolutions up to 2560x1600 are possible. The chipset specifications are available here.

Let's take a quick look at the BD playback performance of the MSI R4350.
